Aintree Day 2 Preview: Min And Politologue To Struggle

Syndicate Captain Cheltmental has studied the second day of action at Aintree and given us his insights for the £30,000 Win 6 Pool.

13:45 – Handicap Hurdle

(Grade 3) (Class 1)

There are a few obvious contenders here such as Brio Conti and Carnardier, with the latter more exciting than the former. However, I quite like the look of Espirit Du Large who looks to be well treated here.

Tedham can defy a 6lb penalty to be on the premises and, at bigger prices, I think Three Musketeers & Lansdman could go well. Mount Mews will win whichever race he decides to actually race in so, at the long odds, he’s likely to be he’s worthy of a mention

Selections – Espirit Du Large, Three Musketeers, Landsman, Tedham

14:20 – Top Novices’ Hurdle

(Grade 1) (Class 1)

Trappy looking race but Supreme placed horses have a good record here so Itchy Feet deserves to be favourite. Nicky Henderson also has a good record here so Precious Cargo might progress past some of these and I think he’ll enjoy the ground.

Felix Desjy does need to be ridden from the front to show his best but he has a chance of doing that and Aramon is a good horse but he’s starting to look exposed. Rouge Vif could play a part if handling the ground as I think this track and trip will be to his liking

Selections – Precious Cargo, Rouge Vif, Itchy Feet

14:50 – Mildmay Novices’ Chase

(Grade 1) (Class 1)

Topofthegame deserves to be an odds on shot and he’s the most likely winner of this race. Lostintranslation is exciting trying this new trip and, if that is the key to him, then his form to date is very good. Mr Whipped is capable with a good round of jumping but I do worry whether he’s quite up to this level

Selections – Topofthegame, Lostintranslation

15:25 – The Melling Chase

(Grade 1) (Class 1)

Another competitive looking race but I’d be happy to be harsh on a few of these to get to a verdict.

Politologue has never been a horse I consider a top draw competitor and, although he won this race last year and put up a monster effort in the Champion Chase, I just can’t have him at the price. Min could still prove that he’s best at this trip and I don’t think he had a hard race last month. There is also a concern that he’s not quite as good as he once looked.

Hell’s Kitchen would have a huge chance if allowed to bowl along in front and if he does I’d expect him to go close but Waiting Patiently can’t be written off after that Ascot run and these conditions should suit. In fairness he’s probably about the right price so he’s not so much a value play but I do think he deserves another chance

Selections – Waiting Patiently, Hell’s Kitchen

16:05 – Topham Handicap Chase

(Grade 3) (Class 1)

Horror of a race for me and it’s hard to be confident about anything. Janika looks set to run well again though and San Benedeto comes here in good form. Born Survivor appears to have been set up for this race so that’s worth noting and Call It Magic is worth a second look

Selections – San Benedeto, Boen Survivor, Call It Magic

16:40 – Sefton Novices’ Hurdle

(Grade 1) (Class 1)

The comments will that reflect there are plenty with chances here but I think Emitom is the one they all need to beat.

Downtown Getway does need to step forward and might be one for next season but I like the way he’s progressed, albeit it not obviously. The Captains Inn is horse I think could be very good so he’s overpriced for me and while Walk Away is hard to evaluate the more I watch his debut the more I like it

Selections – Emitom, The Captains Inn, Walk Away
