Antonio Silva has the makings of their next shrewd addition after the 22-year-old made the move to Vitality Stadium for a fee of \u20ac30m. This makes Silva one of the most expensive signings in Bournemouth\u2019s history, but there\u2019s a good chance that outlay will quickly start to resemble a bargain.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t so long ago that Silva was considered one of the best young defenders in the world. He broke through at Benfica as a teenager, quickly establishing himself as a first team figure for one of Portugal\u2019s biggest clubs. Silva made his international debut as a 19-year-old and was a starting player for Portugal at Euro 2024.<\/p>\n
Since then, Silva\u2019s development has stalled. He lost his place in the Benfica lineup to Tomas Araujo and subsequently wasn\u2019t included in Roberto Martinez\u2019s 26-man Portugal squad for this summer\u2019s World Cup. Silva needed a move this summer to reinvigorate himself. A new environment could help him do this.<\/p>\n
The \u20ac30m fee Bournemouth paid for Silva this summer might have been triple that two years ago when some of Europe\u2019s biggest clubs were reportedly circling. Real Madrid in particular were believed to be interested in the central defender whose potential is clear to anyone who has watched him.<\/p>\n
Silva is an all-round defender. He is comfortable with the ball at his feet, and with both feet. The 22-year-old can feed possession into the centre of the pitch just as efficiently as he can switch play to the wide areas. That latter quality could be key to facilitating Bournemouth\u2019s style of play in quick transition.<\/p>\n
Tactically, Silva reads the game well and has good positional awareness. If Marco Rose intends on pushing Bournemouth\u2019s defensive line closer to the halfway line, the Portuguese could be one of the Cherries\u2019 most important players this season. His game is well-suited for the Premier League.<\/p>\n
While Bournemouth lost manager Andoni Iraola to Liverpool, they have largely kept the bulk of their squad together over the summer. Centre back Marcos Senesi departed as a free agent to join Tottenham Hotspur. Otherwise, the Cherries have a solid platform to build on for the 2026\/27 campaign.<\/p>\n
Last season saw Bournemouth lose Antoine Semenyo, Ilya Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Dango Ouattara and yet Iraola still managed to keep his team moving forward. The Vitality Stadium outfit haven\u2019t had the same level of turnover this summer with Silva joining a stable group, albeit under new management.<\/p>\n
At 22, Silva still has time to develop his game. The Premier League will be a step up in quality from Liga Portugal, but Silva has already demonstrated his ability in the Champions League for Benfica and at international level for the Portuguese national team. He should be able to handle the rigours of the English top flight.<\/p>\n
If Bournemouth harness Silva correctly, they will be reimbursed for the \u20ac30m they have paid for the central defender when they collect an even larger fee from one of the Premier League\u2019s elite clubs. Top-level centre backs are hard to find and Silva has the potential to be among the best in the world in his position.<\/p>\n
Huijsen and Zabarnyi used Bournemouth as a springboard to two of the biggest clubs in Europe in the shape of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain respectively and Silva has the skill set to follow in their footsteps.
