Real Madrid are fast becoming an unmanageable mess. Losing El Clasico at Camp Nou, confirming the league title for Barcelona at the weekend is as clear a sign as they can get to signify the depth of their issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the face of it, the players are the problem. It is easy to blame one man in particular, Kylian Mbappe. The France star arrived as arguably the most high profile free agent in history in 2024, and individually has excelled as many would have expected. His 24 goals this season have him leading the \u2018Pichichi\u2019 trophy as La Liga top goalscorer, which he also won last year.<\/p>\n

Yet, there is a trend developing that looks upon Mbappe less than favourably. Since he arrived, Madrid have won neither the league title nor the Champions League, while Paris Saint-Germain, the club he left after years of flirting with the exit door, were crowned European champions as soon as departed and are preparing for another final. Recently, it emerged that there was a petition, signed by almost 70 million people, demanding he leave Los Blancos.<\/p>\n

It is too simplistic to say it is all Mbappe\u2019s fault, but there are legitimate issues he must be, in part, held accountable for. He and Vinicius Junior, Madrid\u2019s main attacking star before he arrived, struggle to share the limelight. Both play off the left wing, both want the responsibility of carrying the team and neither will likely step back for the betterment of the collective because doing so will likely cede ground in any potential race for the Ballon d\u2019Or in future.<\/p>\n

Add that dynamic to the consistent stories of fall outs in training, with Federico Valverde reportedly ending up in hospital after a clash with Aurelien Tchouameni and the fact Xabi Alonso was sacked chiefly because a number of squad members, Vini supposedly chief among them, weren\u2019t taking on his message, and the full picture becomes visible.<\/p>\n

It is an open secret at this point that Florentino Perez, Madrid\u2019s president, believes Jose Mourinho is the answer to the problem. Law and order is needed, he thinks, but that could end up being a huge mistake. It certainly shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation, and why Madrid have previously been successful in the second spell of his presidency.<\/p>\n

Mourinho is a divisive figure and somebody who can lead with an iron fist. At the height of his powers, when he won league titles wherever he went, football seemed to suit his approach. But it has moved on and left him behind at the elite level since he last sat in the home dugout at the Santiago Bernabeu, both tactically and with man-management. Laying down the law to a chaotic, highly-charged dressing room with big egos and even bigger entourages may appear like the best idea on the surface, but it could end up like throwing a petrol bomb on a car fire.<\/p>\n

Mourinho\u2019s style was to be tolerated at his best because he always won, but now that isn\u2019t the case, his track record of isolating players and struggling for long-term dominance should be put under the microscope. In his first spell, he had high-profile fall outs with club legends like Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas, the latter this week stating that he should be nowhere near a return.<\/p>\n

It feels incredibly unlikely that his authoritarian approach will resonate with Mbappe or Vinicius, the latter he publicly criticised after the Brazilian accused one of his Benfica players of racism in a Champions League match earlier this season.<\/p>\n

Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane have both shown that a quiet and calm approach to managing Madrid is what ultimately yields success. But Perez has rarely thought deeply enough about who his coach is and how they impact the club; in his first spell, known as the \u2018Galactico era\u2019, no big name managers came in at all. He thought anybody could coach a team with David Beckham, Luis Figo, Ronaldo and Zidane in it.<\/p>\n

He has been more considered since returning in 2009, but Mourinho has never felt like a good fit. Perez called him in a desperate attempt to end Barcelona\u2019s dominance under Pep Guardiola, which he did by winning La Liga in 2012, but he didn\u2019t play the style of football Madrid fans love or win the Champions League. His three-year spell was hardly a resounding success.<\/p>\n

Now, his spotlight has dimmed considerably, coaching clubs like Roma, Fenerbahce and Benfica. His track record is no longer befitting of Madrid\u2019s expectation level, but again, Perez is calling with one job in mind, dismissing all other factors which clearly make him a bad fit.<\/p>\n

Unless Mourinho handles this job with care, it will likely all end in tears. Unfortunately, change has not been his way up until now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
