12.40 – Pertemps Network Novices’ Handicap Hurdle – 2m<\/strong><\/p>\n

A competitive opener to start Classic Chase day and the top-weight WILL STING has each-way claims. The son of Scorpion has gradually improved his form over hurdles, and his latest fifth in a stronger-looking race compared to this weekend\u2019s event was better than the bare result suggested having travelled strongly on the front-end to an extent. An opening handicap mark of 109 could prove exploitable.<\/p>\n

Of the rest at bigger-prices, DETACHED won\u2019t be inconvenienced by the soft ground and remains on a workable mark. Whilst K\u2019CHOU DE PECOS AA is seemingly over-priced according to the form-book and makes some appeal from a much-reduced mark.<\/p>\n

13.15 – Edward Courage Cup Handicap Chase – 2m<\/strong><\/p>\n

On paper, this looks a highly tricky puzzle despite the small number of runners.<\/p>\n

However, I\u2019m keen to focus on the top-two in the market, firstly SKY PIRATE, who took the scalp of subsequent winner Ibleo at Cheltenham last time and is very much the one to beat despite an 11Ib hike to contend with on ground that\u2019s probably going to be testing.<\/p>\n

His main danger appears to be AMOOLA GOLD, who is tied in closely with Sky Pirate on a line through recent winner, Ibleo. It\u2019s notable to see Harry Skelton opt to ride him over stable companion Destrier and that decision can pay dividends with another bold showing.<\/p>\n

13.50 – McCoy Contractors Civils And Infrastructure Hampton Novices’ Chase – 3m<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just the three runners turned out for this Grade Two, though it\u2019s compact with star quality and the former Willie Mullins-trained NEXT DESTINATION looks the one to beat.<\/p>\n

The former Grade-One winner heads here after a good win at Newbury, where he jumped brilliantly and won\u2019t mind conditions, nor the distance. He travelled well through his race that day, and his jumping was good for a chasing debutant. Paul Nicholls\u2019 nine-year-old has all the credentials to take high rank among this season and his back-class should see him come out on top here.<\/p>\n

FIDDLERONTHEROOF will no doubt be a popular choice for punters in receipt of 5Ib from his market rival too. He hasn\u2019t done a lot wrong over fences despite only winning one of them and perhaps the step up to three-miles is what\u2019s required.<\/p>\n

14.25 – Ballymore Leamington Novices’ Hurdle – 2m5f<\/strong><\/p>\n

An exceptional renewal of this Grade Two event with several in with chances. OSCAR ELITE looked potentially high-class when hacking up at Chepstow on both occasions this term.<\/p>\n

The form hasn\u2019t worked out that great, but he won both races in the manner of a smart horse and he\u2019s already proven himself to be effective on heavy ground. The Colin Tizzard yard are only 1 from 21 with their hurdlers here which is a minor concern, but he\u2019s the top-rated runner for a reason and looks value.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no surprise to see connections step MIND CONDITION up in grade following a brace of impressive victories already this season. This is a much tougher assignment, but his assured strong-travelling style will stand him in good stead. He won\u2019t lack for stamina and the ground should prove to be no impediment towards his chances.<\/p>\n

15.00 – McCoy Contractors Civil Engineering Classic Handicap Chase – 3m5f<\/strong><\/p>\n

A wide-open feature contest and, from my point of view, this looks much weaker than previous renewals.<\/p>\n

The Venetia Williams-trained DIDERO VALLIS ran a strange race in the Becher Chase last time out having been up with the pace before dropping to the back of the field, in which case looked like being tailed off. Having said that, the eight-year-old then stayed on again when the race was pretty much done. On that evidence, this sort of trip might be the catalyst for a return to form. Also, he\u2019s proven on heavy ground and looks well-handicapped on previous form with Tom Scudamore taking the reins.<\/p>\n

LE BREUIL is sure to have his supporters again and has to be considered given his initial mark is well within his compass being 5Ib lower than when winning the four-miler at the Cheltenham Festival. He is the class act in the field and is very well treated on a mark of 140 having finished a staying-on fifth in this race twelve months ago when on a mark of 148. He\u2019ll handle conditions and has solid each-way credentials.<\/p>\n

WALK IN THE MILL has plenty of back-class having placed in the 2019 Grand National and that is normally a positive sign in the context of this weekend\u2019s race. Providing his latest fall hasn\u2019t left a mark and the ground does not become too testing, he looks a serious each-way player.<\/p>\n

15.35 – Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle – 3m1f<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a race like this I like to have two horses on my side with my main selection being IMPERIAL ALCAZAR who looked in need of the run when last seen on seasonal debut in the Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle Grade Three event at Haydock. He travelled like the best horse in the race for a long way before blowing up two out and, from a 1Ib lower mark with conditions to suit, he looks good each-way material.<\/p>\n

A similar mention can be given to KEPAGGE who showed distinct signs of promise when fourth on his return to action at Cheltenham and left all the impression that he would come on significantly for the run. From a 2Ib lower mark, appeals as the type to do better in this discipline.<\/p>\n
