12.10 – Betfair Weighed In Podcast Newton Novices’ Hurdle – 1m7f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

SEVERANCE<\/a> was a useful sort on the flat for Mick Channon and looked a potentially smart recruit for Ben Pauling when hacking up on hurdle debut at Carlisle, travelling and jumping impeccably before cruising clear to score by eight-lengths. He should be tough to beat here with conditions, track and trip to suit.<\/p>\n

LIANDINABO LAD showed above-average form when reaching frame on all three outings in bumpers and made a sparkling hurdles debut at Bangor last month following a long absence. He jumped and galloped his rivals into submission that day and in hope he\u2019ll be ridden in a similar manner under Richard Johnson, I\u2019m convinced he will improve and be hard to keep out of the frame.<\/p>\n

12.40 – Betfair Supports Safer Gambling Week Handicap Chase – 3m1f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This looks wide-open, but SNOW LEOPARDESS was no doubt the best of these over hurdles and has shaped encouragingly on both starts over fences this autumn behind subsequent winners. Her opening handicap mark of 126 looks essentially lenient, therefore, she\u2019s a massive each-way player here under regular rider Brian Hughes, who has ridden her effectively the last twice.<\/p>\n

NEWTIDE has to carry top-weight on his seasonal debut which won\u2019t be easy, but he\u2019s already scored at Grade Two level over timber and his sixth in the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival when last seen was a fairly decent effort. His handicap mark of 142 doesn\u2019t look overly excessive, so he can be expected to go well.<\/p>\n

The Evan Williams-trained SECRET REPRIEVE held his form in a couple of three-runner contests last term and, with his handicap mark looking on the well-handicapped side of things, he\u2019s another to consider in this event.<\/p>\n

13.15 – Back And Lay On Betfair Exchange Graduation Chase – 2m5f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Paul Nicholls-trained MASTER TOMMYTUCKER is prone to lacking conviction at his fences, which has cost him some big pay cheques previously, but there\u2019s no doubting his natural ability. His confidence will be sky high for winning a match-race easily when last seen and, granted a clear round with the return to a left-handed track sure to suit, he\u2019s capable of scaling greater heights and has an excellent chance of winning this race.<\/p>\n

Of the others, DASHEL DRASHER lacks a recent run, but he\u2019s a likeable sort, who has a terrific strike-rate and was impressive when winning over C&D back in December. He\u2019s undergone wind surgery since which I find interesting and he should make a bold fist of things albeit he\u2019ll come on for the run and is one to monitor for remainder of the campaign.<\/p>\n

13.50 – Betfair Racing<\/a> Only Bettor Handicap Hurdle – 2m2f<\/strong><\/p>\n

A very competitive handicap, so I\u2019m going into the race with three selections.<\/p>\n

Ben Pauling\u2019s SHAKEM UP\u2019ARRY put up some useful efforts in defeat last term, two of which were behind Nicky Henderson\u2019s high-class pair SHISHKIN and MISTER COFFEY. That form reads well in the context of this weekend\u2019s handicap hurdle race given this six-year-old will face nothing the calibre of those two horses here. Furthermore, his opening handicap mark of 130 looks more than within range for him as he bolted up by seven-lengths last month and was even thought good enough to contest the Grade One Ballymore Novices\u2019 Hurdle on his penultimate outing.<\/p>\n

David Pipe\u2019s UMBRIGADO was highly tried last term, two in which came in Graded company and he far from disgraced himself on each occasion. He was fifth on this card last season in a similar looking-contest from a mark of 142 and is 3Ib lower in this easier assignment with soft ground looking his optimism. His yard is flying and one can assume that race has been the plan for quite some time. I think he\u2019s an excellent each-way proposition.<\/p>\n

ON THE WILD SIDE looks a significant improved for Richard Newland, who has won three of his four outings, including twice in the mud last month. All three of his victories to date have worked out nicely and this unexposed seven-year-old has been handed an appealing handicap debut mark of 129. He\u2019s certainly high on the shortlist with more to come.<\/p>\n

14.25 – Betfair Exchange Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle – 3m<\/strong><\/p>\n

At first glance, this looked a minefield, but I\u2019m quite hopeful we have the race covered with three selections.<\/p>\n

David Pipe has won this race three times in 2010, 2011 and 2013. He saddles MAIN FACT, who seeks a remarkable ninth-straight success. He was fancied for last weekend\u2019s Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham, but connections have opted to come here instead which I find rather interesting. This will be his first foray at three-miles but he\u2019s become a substantial winning machine and will relish the forecast soft ground.<\/p>\n

IMPERIAL ALCAZAR developed into a useful novice hurdler last season, winning three of his four outings. He was a shade unlucky not to be four-from-four when second at Newcastle, but his victory over Protektorat looks even better now given that one looks a bright prospect over fences. This six-year-old looks like a stayer in the making, goes well fresh and should relish the step up to three-miles.<\/p>\n

WHOLESTONE looked rusty on his reappearance last time out but takes a significant drop down in class here with conditions up his street. He\u2019s generally a consistent individual for connections and providing he can cut out his occasional mistakes, he\u2019s likely to make a bold bid.<\/p>\n

15.00 – Betfair Chase – 3m1f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The feature race of the day is the final puzzle on the card for us to solve. Only five go to post but it\u2019s a tremendous renewal to say the least.<\/p>\n

Lostintranslation ended BRISTOL DE MAI\u2019s attempt of claiming this race for a third time but conditions look in favour of the popular grey this weekend and I\u2019m hopeful the nine-year-old can regain his title. He loves it around here and given that his record at this track overall is outstanding, he\u2019s going to be tough to pass on the front-end with the likelihood of getting a soft lead once more.<\/p>\n
