Hardly the best omen to take into\u00a0the game.<\/p>\n<p>However, manager Phil Brown knows the club like the back of his hand having made over\u00a0200 appearances for the club and also managed them at the turn of the century.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll need all of his nous to ensure his Southend side take anything at all back to Essex but in\u00a0Nile Ranger, he does have a forward that has finally begun to knuckle down and show what\u00a0he\u2019s capable of.<\/p>\n<p>Goals galore here, mostly for the hosts, but they\u2019ll have to battle for their <strong>3-1<\/strong> victory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oldham v Shrewsbury<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite only scoring 2 goals \u2013 the joint worst in the division with Coventry, Oldham find\u00a0themselves relatively comfortable in 13 th place and just a win from the top seven.<\/p>\n<p>One win and three draws from their five games shows how hard they\u2019ve been to beat this\u00a0season, but they\u2019ve been far from inspiring.<\/p>\n<p>Shrewsbury have scored double the amount of goals of their opponents, but perhaps more\u00a0importantly, they\u2019ve also conceded double the amount.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s precisely that lack of cohesion in defence which has authored their poor start to the\u00a0campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Only three goalless draws in this fixture stretching back to 1980 suggests that there will be\u00a0goals, but given the current form of both teams, there\u2019s unlikely to be many.<\/p>\n<p>Boundary Park is one of the Shrews bogey grounds too, so I\u2019m going for a dire <strong>1-0<\/strong> home\u00a0victory here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Millwall v Bradford<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the games of the day will take place in south London at The New Den.<\/p>\n<p>Millwall are just a win away from top spot but currently sit in fifth, and they are the second\u00a0highest scorers in the division going into this match with 11.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately they are also the team that has conceded the second highest amount\u00a0whereas Bradford are only behind Port Vale in the amount of goals they\u2019ve shipped. Practically unheard of, but those five points are at least enough to\u00a0keep them in mid table.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, they\u2019re only two points behind their visitors despite not winning a game in 2016\/17.<\/p>\n<p>It could be something to do with the fact that manager Rob Page is setting his team up to\u00a0not get beaten rather than going out to win games.<\/p>\n<p>From an entertainment point of view it makes for a somewhat boring spectacle, but Page\u00a0won\u2019t give too hoots if it helps his side stay in the division.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll take the positives and point to the fact that his team haven\u2019t lost as an affirmation that\u00a0the tactics he\u2019s employed thus far are working.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t expect this game to be any different, <strong>1-1<\/strong> the final score.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gillingham v Sheff Utd.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the greatest of respect to both clubs, it\u2019s unusual to see Gillingham as high as sixth,\u00a0whilst Sheffield United are languishing in 20th position.<\/p>\n<p>The Blades have had disastrous start to 2016\/17 and are just two points off of the bottom of\u00a0the league.<\/p>\n<p>Gillingham are flying high despite being the only side in the top 10 to have a negative goal\u00a0difference.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, both clubs need to settle and start playing the football for which they can be\u00a0renowned.<\/p>\n<p>Billy Sharp and James Wilson saw United edge past Oxford at the weekend for their first\u00a0victory since Chris Wilder took charge last season, and the manager is ready to drop anyone\u00a0that continues to underperform.<\/p>\n<p>The Gills edged a five goal thriller against Shrewsbury last time out, and will have their work\u00a0cut out again despite United\u2019s poor form.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time that the visitors clicked and I\u2019m going to back them for a slender away victory and\u00a0one that they\u2019ll have to give everything to achieve. <strong>0-1<\/strong> is my selection here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slovakia v England<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An interesting first pick by Sam Allardyce as England manager.<\/p>\n<p>No room for Jack Wilshere or Ross Barkley but a call up for West Ham\u2019s Michail Antonio.\u00a0Selections that Big Sam will live or die by.<\/p>\n<p>Although the brand of football won\u2019t necessarily be to everyone\u2019s taste, where Allardyce\u00a0does win is that he will give the national team back its identity.<\/p>\n<p>Playing to the team\u2019s strengths rather than trying to shoehorn them into a style that doesn\u2019t\u00a0suit at international level.<\/p>\n<p>The work done on the training pitch prior to this game is vital and we\u2019ll find out exactly how\u00a0well things have gone after 90 minutes on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>A functional if not inspiring <strong>1-1<\/strong> draw to kick off the new era.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No sooner has the season begun, than we stop for the international break.
