James’ Pick 15 Preview ft. North London Derby

Every week I will be reviewing the weekend Pick 15.

The associated syndicate reference is: 827TDHPH

We will always be going for the Jackpot of £800,000 with a maximum of 64 lines (£128.00 stake).

We will not Cash Out – we will not fold to pressure – we will win this thing!

Last week started off pretty well. Apart from a very surprising execution of Chelsea by Tottenham everything was very close. Southampton kept trying to make their game a draw, but just didn’t quite come through in the end. But an unprecedented run of 6 draws in a row in the second half of the Pick 15 put to bed everyone’s dreams of the jackpot.

Each week I will be highlighting some fixtures as bankers – games which carry my maximum confidence – and will be tallying up my success rate on these.

There were two bankers from last week: Derby and Montpellier. Derby came from behind against Wednesday and held on. Montpellier also came back from behind but gave away a silly penalty and had to settle for a draw.

Bankers so far:  15 out of 31 (still not good)

Bankers this week (a record 4!): Stoke, Nice, E Frankfurt and Newcastle.

Birmingham vs Preston

Preston haven’t lost in the last 5 league games and Birmingham are having a bit of a wobble. I really love this game for a 1-1 draw. Despite losing recently though Birmingham have been putting the goals away still (scoring 9 in the last 4 league games), so I will cover the home win to be safe.

Selection: Home / Draw

Bolton vs Wigan

Both of these teams are nursing terrible open wounds in terms of form. 4 losses and a draw for each of them in the last 5 league fixtures. It’s going to be incredibly difficult to pick them apart so a draw must be covered, but I guess Wigan’s losses have looked slightly less bad so I feel there’s an away edge.

Selection: Draw / Away

Reading vs Stoke

Stoke are going to stuff Reading like a little teddy bear, exactly as they did to Derby.

Selection: Away

Huddersfield vs Brighton

Tough game to call. Huddersfield have been holding their own lately against bottom half teams and Brighton are leaking goals. I feel a turnaround for Brighton is coming, but I have to go with form and back the home team. But I’m having a punt on an away too because Huddersfield only have two wins on the board so far and my confidence in them is low.

Selection: Home / Away

Newcastle vs West Ham

I’ve said before that I’ve been waiting for Newcastle to remember how to play football and it looks like that time has come. They had actually been fairly unlucky and they’re perhaps now getting the rub of the green. If they put in another performance like they have been then they’ll be too much for West Ham.

Selection: Home

Getafe vs Espanyol

Espanyol were hammered on the score sheet against Girona, but the stats show they were on top for most of the game. Their position in the league above Real Madrid has been no fluke and a win against Getafe is very much on the cards.

Selection: Away

Middlesbrough vs Aston Villa

What a game Villa just had against Forest! Forest went 2 goals ahead twice only to be pegged back again by a relentless Villa. That means Villa have scored a tremendous 12 goals in the last 3 games against very decent opposition. Middlesbrough though have only lost twice and have the best defence record in the league by a country mile. So I’m backing the home team, but Villa could run riot again so I’m punting for an away win too.

Selection: Home / Away

Guingamp vs Nice

This is one of those games where I’m suspicious of the odds. Nice have won the last 4 games on the bounce and Guingamp are bottom with only a single win to their name. It really should be an away banker.

Selection: Away

Monaco vs Montpellier

It feels so wrong to be betting against Monaco this season given how they played last season, but it can’t be ignored where they stand. Sadly Henry is just not proving to be as good a manager as he was a player.

Selection: Away

Nimes vs Amiens SC

I think we all know that every game in Ligue 1 is a draw, and there’s absolutely no chance whatsoever that this game is any exception.

Selection: Draw

Real Betis vs Sociedad

Real Betis beat Barcelona. Barcelona! They scored 4 times against Barcelona! And then followed it up with a loss against Villarreal. They are favourites to take this despite being lower in the league but a draw is also a good shout here.

Selection: Home / Draw

Sassuolo vs Udinese

Sassuolo will win this game because they are playing Udinese, who despite their surprise win against Roma are still Udinese.

Selection: Home

Arsenal vs Tottenham

I really want to back all three results here. Arsenal, because they’re at home and it’s Emery and not Wenger. I want to back the draw because it’s very, very likely. And I want to back Spurs because they just beat Inter Milan and batted Chelsea aside like they were nothing. Should we still be in it I will keep the excitement going until the final whistle by selecting home and away.

Selection: Home / Away

E Frankfurt vs Wolfsburg

Eintracht are 3rd in the league and at home. There’s no reason to believe they won’t win this.

Selection: Home

Alaves vs Sevilla

If you don’t follow Spanish football, then Sevilla are above a few teams you might have heard of… Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Alaves are having a pretty amazing season too, but I think Sevilla will edge it.

Selection: Away
