Ajax vs. Tottenham: Social media reaction

After the unbelievable drama of Tuesday night, Tottenham were determined not to be outdone by Liverpool’s heroics. They were attempting to overcome a single goal deficit to Ajax but got off to a dreadful start when Matthijs de Ligt doubled the Dutch side’s advantage in just the fifth minute of the game.

De Ligt has arguably enhanced his reputation more than any other player in this year’s competition and the praise was forthcoming.

The Londoners simply couldn’t impose themselves on the game and, in the 35th minute, were punished again when Hakim Ziyech scored again for Ajax. As half-time arrived, Spurs needed three to qualify and many felt they couldn’t do it. Probably none were as confident, though, as this guy.

The stage was set for a hero and up stepped Lucas Moura. The Brazilian scored twice in quick succession to level the match. Spurs were right back in it and suddenly just needed a single goal. They were all over Ajax but couldn’t find a way through, until the 96th minute.

Sensationally, Moura popped up again to complete his hat-trick and send Tottenham through. The reaction of most viewers was personified by Rio Ferdinand.

The hero of the day was as emotional as many Spurs fans after the match.

Comparisons were made between Moura and the previous evening’s star, Divock Origi, as they shared an eerie connection.

Tottenham fans were revelling in the irony that Moura had been been sold to them by former-Psg, now-Arsenal manager Unai Emery.

Although not every Tottenham fan enjoyed the experience. One of them, having abandoned all hope, opted to leave the stadium at half-time. Ouch.

Whilst most of the attention was directed on the two incredible comebacks, not everyone could resist having a dig at the losing teams, Barcelona and Ajax.

However, for many it was just all about looking forward to an all-English final.

With Chelsea and Arsenal still hoping to contest the Europa League final and Manchester City on the verge of winning the Premier League, it was mentioned that there would be one notable club missing from the end of season drama.

But ultimately, once the hysteria settled down, all that remained was a man who needed to eat an egg.
